About Me

A bit about who I am, what I do, and what drives me

I'm André, a Systems Engineer at Cloudflare , based in Lisbon, Portugal. I work on the Cloudflare Radar team and contribute to the AI Crawl Control dashboard.

I'm drawn to the intersection of systems engineering and full-stack development. I care about building software that is reliable, maintainable, and thoughtfully designed. Whether it's a backend service handling real traffic or a frontend that respects the user's time, I try to approach everything with the same standard: make it work well, make it clear, and make it easy to change.

Background

I studied Computer Science and Engineering at ISEL (BSc) and Instituto Superior Tecnico (MSc), focusing on Distributed Systems and Cybersecurity. My dissertation, "Serverless Snapshot Orchestration", scored 19/20.

Before Cloudflare, I was a Teaching Assistant at ISEL, helping teach Algorithms & Data Structures, Web Programming, and Software Laboratory.

  • How distributed systems work (and break) at scale

  • Edge computing and serverless — partly why I joined Cloudflare

Who's Gonna Carry The Boats?!

Swimming for 8 years, field hockey for 4, badminton for 3. University made me switch to gym, which I now love and do regularly with friends or alone.

Guitar & Music

Livin' on a prayer!

I picked up the guitar in September 2023, teaching myself with JustinGuitar and other online resources. Work and my thesis slowed me down in March 2024, but I'll be back at it soon. Rock is my jam, though my girlfriend has also pulled me into the indie scene.

Wander Often, Eat Well

Love exploring new places and cultures, aiming for 3+ trips a year. I also really like food. Portuguese cuisine is home, but Japanese, Spanish, and Italian are close contenders.

SIUUUU!

Not a fanatic, but I love to watch a good football (or soccer for my American friends) match with a cold beer in my hand. I support Sporting Clube de Portugal since I was little, and I'm also a sympathizer of Manchester United in England.

Gaming

Game On

I started gaming on a Nintendo DSi, moved to the PSP, then PC (spent countless hours playing Minecraft, CS:GO, Overwatch, and more). I also had a PS4 where I played Call of Duty, FIFA, Fortnite and Horizon Zero Dawn. My comfort game? Hollow Knight.
